Lets start off this time with one of the most important formations that is played in slap bass, namely the pentatonic variation or scale.

"Penta", as you may know, means "five", and is representative of the number of notes in the pentatonic scale.

Anyway, these lessons are concentrating more on technique and less on musical theory*. This particular technique is shown both on the video and the tab/notation (video is below).

Starting in the key of B, I perform E-String 7th Fret (B), dead note D-String 9th Fret, D-String 9th Fret hammer on to 11th Fret, then pull off to 9th again, dead note A-String 9th Fret, A-String 9th Fret hammer on to 11th Fret, D-String 9th fret, D-String 7th Fret twice in succession.

As can be seen, each successive note played on a particular string is two frets up from its predecessor, giving that blues/pentatonic type sound. This technique is best shown off in soloing, although it can be used to embellish a bridge melody of a song. The tab includes another pattern not shown in the video... see if you can figure it out!
