Technique 11 : Split String Pentatonic Phrasing

We begin this final section with split pentatonic phrasing.

The "split" here means that the phrasing is played across two strings, in this case the A and the G string. You can get a really nice rhythm going with these, which makes your playing sound that much more sophisticated.

To play, refer to the video/tab and execute the following:

Dead String Pop G-String 7th Fret, Slap hammer-on A-String 9th to 11th fret, muted open E-String, popped G-String 9th fret, two muted open E-String, popped G-String 7th fret, two open E-String slaps.

Although this seems like a fairly easy technique on paper, timing is of the essence. This technique will serve you well in any situation, whether it be within a song passage or within the phrase of a solo piece. I have found that the split string pentatonic goes very well with the double popping technique as described in Technique #2, as well as with triplet runs and leading pentatonic triplets.
